Spring Group Activities

The Yarn Nookers will be participating in the 11th Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday, March 20th. A team of knitters from the shop will be racing for a cure. We are very excited that the race has moved from downtown Lafayette to Girard Park ~ just a block from Yarn Nook! We will meet at the shop and walk over to the race.

Here are some ways you may choose to participate:
  • Join us in the race on March 20th. You must register online or by mail. Be sure to join our team at registration by entering Yarn Nookers as the team name!
  • Donate money to Komen Acadiana in the name of one of our Team participants. If you are unsure of who all is participating and would like to donate in the name of our team, you can donate in Kim Gunniss’s name. She is a shop owner and our team captain.
Please call or come by the shop to let us know that you have signed up to walk with us and so that we can order you a Yarn Nook Team shirt. If you would like a shirt whether you are participating in the race or not, call Kim ASAP to let her know so she can include you in her order.

We will be knitting and crocheting hats and bottle cozies we can use during the walk, so come by to choose your pretty pink yarn and patterns.

Yarn Nook would like to extend a big thank you to all of you who took the time to help with Project Helmetliner by knitting or donating to our cause! This will be an ongoing project for the knitters at our shop and we encourage all of you to consider helping us by knitting a helmetliner for our troops!

The Yarn Nookers are working hard to knit beautiful Chemo Caps for the children at St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis. There are many yarns at the shop which are perfect for knitting chemo caps ~ soft, colorful, machine washable. Come by to see some of the caps that have already been knitted and to choose your yarn and a pattern.

Of course, you are all also invited to our regular Wednesday Night Sit & Stitch every week 6pm - 8pm.

Versatile Beret

Saturdays, February 13, 20, 10:30am - 12pm
(two 1.5 hour classes), $30
Call or stop by Yarn Nook to sign-up for this class.

“Few items of clothing have been adopted by so many varied groups of people living in different periods of history as the beret.” (

And here, you can see that we have come a long way from military headgear of ancient Greece! This 21st Century model is chic and stylish and can be worn in 5 or 6 different ways. Three are shown here.

In class we will make an adult-sized beret using circular needles. There will be no seams to sew up! To keep things simple I would suggest using a medium weight
yarn calling for sizes 8, 9 or 10 needles. You will use 2 different sized needles for the hat: the smaller size for the ribbed brim and the larger size for the rest of the hat. For example, if the yarn calls for a size 8 needle, you will use a size 6 for the ribbed brim. If the yarn calls for a size 10 needle, you will use a size 8 for the brim. You will also need double-pointed needles of the larger size for finishing the top of the hat.

For this beret we will be knitting and purling, increasing and decreasing. We will learn to top off the hat with an I cord or a Bobble. Patterns will also by available for youth and baby sizes.
