New Arrivals

Kim got in some great new things this week!

A few of the new arrivals are Hiya Hiya Interchangeable Needle Sets (needle sizes 2-8), Universal Yarns such as Poems worsted, Poems sock, and Camo Wool (desert and jungle colorways), and a beautiful Alpaca and Soy silk blend by Southwest Trading company.

October Classes and Workshops

(Call or stop by the shop to sign-up for classes. Those of you cannot attend daytime classes, please let us know what class you would like to take ~ we would be glad to create a class for you in the evening or on Saturday.)

Beginning Knitting Class
This is a class for those who have no prior knitting experience and can be scheduled at your leisure. If you would like to schedule a beginner class for yourself or for a group of friends, just call the shop to set up a time and date.

Intermediate Knitting Class, Tuesdays, October 6, 13, 20, 27, 10am - 12pm.
This class is offered every Tuesday. Students will work with Kim to choose an appropriate project they would like to work on in this class. Those who sign-up for this class should have already taken the Beginning Knitting Class or have a good knowledge of the basics of knitting.

Helmetliner Knit-a-long, Tuesdays, October 6, 13, 20, 27, 1pm - 3pm.
As a participant in the Helmetliner knit-a-long you will learn the long-tail cast-on, joining in the round, knit2 purl2 ribbing, knitted cast on, picking up stitches, decreasing, binding off, working in the round, and reading a pattern!

Sock & Lace Workshop Day, Wednesdays, October 7, 14, 21, 28, 10am - 3pm.
Sock and Lace workshops will be held every Wednesday. If you would like to begin a pair of socks or a lace project, or if you need help with any aspect of knitting socks or lace, you are welcome to join the workshop at any time. You may choose to knit your socks Cuff-down or Toe-up.

Aran Afghan Block of the Month, Wednesdays, October 7, 14, 21, 28, 3pm - 5pm.
In this class series, you will create a beautiful Aran afghan one block at a time over the next few months. Each month, we will focus on one of the squares in the book The Great American Afghan. You may attend as many of the class sessions as you would like during each month. Come by the shop to get your copy of the pattern book for this beautiful afghan and to choose your yarn. The Sidekick Bag, Thursday, October 8, 1pm - 3pm.
Felting is fun, and in this class you will create the terrific felted bag pictured at the top of this newsletter. It is a quick knit full of fun new techniques for you to learn!

Fair Isle ULL Bag, Thursday, October 15, 1pm - 3pm.
Show your school spirit when you sport this great University of Louisiana, Lafayette bag designed by Kim. If you would like to create a bag for a high school team or another college team, Kim will be glad to help you with the design of your unique bag.

Fair Isle LSU Bag, Thursday, October 22, 1pm - 3pm.
Show your school spirit when you sport this great Louisiana State University bag designed by Kim. If you would like to create a bag for a high school team or another college team, Kim will be glad to help you with the design of your unique bag.

Yarn Tasting, Friday, October 16, 11am
Each participant will receive lunch, a “taste” of the beautiful Plymouth Earth Oceanside Organic Cotton yarn, and a technique class during which you will tryout your new yarn.

October Events at Yarn Nook

The Oil Center and Travis Technology Center are hosting a Meet Your Neighbor Poker Walk on Tuesday, October 6th. This event is designed for everyone to explore the shops in the Oil Center. Yarn Nook will remain open until 6:30pm, so come by to knit, pickup some supplies, or to participate in the Poker Walk. (Note: We will still have Sit & Stitch on Wednesday night as well!) Happy Halloween! In order to celebrate Halloween together, Yarn Nook will be hosting a Halloween Pajama Party on Wednesday, October 28th during Sit & Stitch. Join us in your PJs for a spooky fun night.

Join us for fiber and fun during Festival Acadiens et Creoles on Saturday, October 10th. We would love for you to stop by Yarn Nook on your way to this amazing festival in Girard Park (just 1 block from the shop)! We will have a tent setup outside the shop where you can relax, knit or crochet a bit and enjoy the great festival music.

The Fall Gathering Craft Show at the Cottage Shoppe is the place to be the weekend of October 24th and 25th. You are welcome to submit any of your knitted or crocheted items for sale in Yarn Nook's booth at the craft show ~ you will, of course, receive any money your items earn. Starting on Tuesday, October 20th, you are welcome to drop off your items at Yarn Nook ~ we will have price tags available for you to attach to your items. We hope that you will take the time to joins us at the craft show for a fun knit in public weekend as well. For a map to the Cottage Shoppe click here.

The Yarn Nookers are still working hard knitting and crocheting helmetliners for the troops in Afganistan! If you are willing to donate your time and expertise to this worthwhile project, please come by the shop to pick out your yarn today! Knitting a helmetliner is a great way to support our troops and a terrific opportunity to learn lots of new techniques! Please note that we have tweaked the pattern instructions as per suggestions from military personnel, so please take the time to get our revised instructions from Kim.

Of course, you are all also invited to our regular Wednesday Night Sit & Stitch every week 6pm - 8pm.

Oil Center Poker Walk

The Oil Center and Travis Technology Center are hosting a Meet Your Neighbor Poker Walk on Tuesday, October 6th. This event is designed for everyone to explore the shops in the Oil Center. Yarn Nook will remain open until 6:30pm, so come by to knit, pickup some supplies, or to participate in the Poker Walk. (Note: We will still have Sit & Stitch on Wednesday night as well!)

Poker Walk Schedule: (as provided by OCRA)
  • 4:30 - 6pm ~ Walker registration ~ Walkers register and pick up free t-shirt and map at Travis Technology Center, 110 Travis. $5 registration fee will be donated to OCRA.
  • 4:30 - 6:15pm ~ Poker Walk ~ Walkers visit participating merchants and collect a minimum of 7 playing cards in sealed envelopes. The envelopes must remain sealed. For those who cannot walk watch for the MAXGXL limo.
  • 6:15 - 6:30pm ~ Return ~ Walkers return secret poker hands in sealed envelopes to Travis Technology.
  • 6:30pm ~ Awards Festivities Begin ~ Enjoy music and snacks and festivities, meet your Oil Center neighbors, visit with walkers. Walkers register for drawings, enjoy demonstrations, chair massages, blood pressure screenings. Yarn Nook will have a booth!
  • 7:30pm ~ Awards Presentation ~ Winning poker hand receives $500; multiple winners will split the pot. Walker with the most playing cards in sealed envelopes wins Steven Scott's Master Strategies of Super Achievers, a $600 value. In case of tie the winner will be drawn. Drawings held for other prizes, such as a free weekend at the LaQuinta on Pinhook. Yarn Nook will have a drawing for several free knitting lessons.
  • 8:00pm ~ MAXGXL Broadcast ~ View previously televised broadcast in Travis Technology Center. Desserts and coffee. Seating limited to 40.
